A sustainable foundation
The intended acquisition of the cemetery land is an important step. Agreements on burial rights, management and preservation also require careful development.
A lasting resting place means a great deal to many Muslim families. IBO is working on the conditions needed to support that peace sustainably.

For bereaved families, a grave is a place to visit, make dua and remember a loved one.
For many Muslims, the wish for the deceased to remain at peace is part of their approach to death and burial. Closeness to family and the community is also important.
With a cemetery of its own, IBO aims to contribute to a dignified final resting place in Rotterdam and the Rijnmond region, in accordance with Islamic guidelines.
Perpetual grave rest is a central principle for IBO. We are working towards securing the land, clear agreements and an organisation that can care for the cemetery in the long term.

The operating model in the fundraising presentation envisages income from burial rights and, in time, educational and advisory activities. This income should contribute to responsible management and maintenance.
In time, IBO aims to develop a waqf structure: permanently endowed assets whose returns could contribute to running costs. This is a future ambition that still needs further development.
IBO operates on a non-profit basis. Transparency about the organisation, the use of funds and progress is part of the trust the community places in this initiative.
The cooperation agreement has been signed and a planning consultancy is helping shape further development.
The cemetery has not yet opened. The intended land purchase, further layout and agreements on burial rights and management form part of the next steps.
We use perpetual grave rest as an objective. The conditions under which future graves will be allocated must be clearly recorded. Maintenance and financial continuity are also part of this.
The national study conducted by Regioplan for BZK in 2022 highlights the importance of clear terminology, agreements and long-term management. This study is background information; it does not describe conditions already established for IBO.
With your support, we can continue building the Islamic Cemetery Rotterdam.
